Hobbies

Programming, math, physics, spirituality, and motorcycling are my current interests. I have about 4 years of part-time tutoring experience in St. Louis, MO for a private company and Edwardsville, IL for SIUE. With WyzAnt, I have tutored college physics, algebra 2, trigonometry, statistics, probability, pre-algebra, pre-calculus, C, Java, calculus, Win32 shell scripting and C++. I am very well practiced in patience and a perfectly positive attitude toward my students. I strive to not judge others. As a student, I became one of the best at writing clear, easy to follow solutions to simple or difficult problems. Teaching and tutoring have helped me to verbally do the same. I have recently worked in industry for 6 years as a programmer/software engineer. I have programmed for 12 years in my scientific research at Wash U School of Medicine in St. Louis, where I became an expert in Heart Rate Variability. During my dissertation and postdoc, I also programmed a great deal. I was a part-time Unix system administrator for 8 years. The programming languages C, C++, FORTRAN, and Java; the operating systems Unix, Linux, and Windows; and the shell scripting languages DOS, bash, csh, and sh are my specialties. About 4 years as a teaching assistant or teaching fellow in physics during graduate school has been helpful, and I also taught college physics in St. Louis for one semester. I have taught several students C++ programming on the job. I am capable of tutoring any type of mathematics or physics offered here. I will tutor C, C++, FORTRAN, Java, Unix, Linux, and shell scripting (bash, csh, sh). I can teach beginning to expert levels in all programming languages, scripting languages, and OS's just mentioned, except for Java. Currently, I can help beginning and intermediate level Java students. Technical subjects are learned best through practice by problem solving. Concepts will be explained clearly if there is a need. Otherwise, practice is emphasized. Teaching strategy in test taking is beneficial to many students. With adult students, I will help as directed, but I would prefer to teach independence in addition to the subject at hand. For younger students, there may be more of an opportunity to encourage valuable skills for school. Teaching students independence is very valuable, and I will do that if I have the opportunity. The goal of an education is to make one a life-long, independent learner in any subject that interests the individual.
